There are only a limited number of plants that can live in saltwater, and none are true complex plants. The large majority of the desirable plants are macroalgae, which suck up unwanted nutrients from the water (known as "nutrient export", usually done in the refugium). This reduction of nitrates and other waste products serves to help the animals in the main tank grow and also to keep pest microalgae growth to a minimum.
The Chaetomorpha has grown great in my refugiums, and in my main tanks where nitrates were a problem due to over feeding. All tanks now register with zero nitrates. I have since retired my skimmers and just use the refugium for filtration.
